So your resume has finally been noticed and your job-hunting adventure has reached the next level. When you are being invited for an interview, chances like this comes seldomly so you might want to give it your best shot by being prepared. I have done multiple interviews with countless nurse applicants and what I notice frequently is that they are either annoying or impressive, and of course the latter gets hired. In this article, I want to you share with you the do’s and don’ts in nailing job interviews.
First off, let us talk about how you should project yourself and how you should act during the interview. It is true that first impressions last and even hand gestures and mannerisms can affect the interview process so be sure that when you practice in the mirror, try to minimize these distractions by being calm and sitting upright (note that slouching is a bad idea, which I personally hate). Here are other tips to remember:
- Never come in late.
- Dress to impress, but do not go overboard.
- Greet the interviewer politely, offer a firm handshake, and wait for the seat to be offered to you.
- During the conversation, maintain eye contact.
- Don’t use scripted answers to questions as these are very obvious.
- Speak at the right pace, clearly enunciate words and maintain consistency throughout the interview.
- Never lie just to impress an employer.
- Smile and look enthusiastic during the course of the interview.
- Yes or no answers are never good enough, try to elaborate but keep it short.
Nailing job interviews is just like a walk in the park when you express your true self and describe how you can be an asset to the company because you have done your research. When your answers are aligned with the company’s objectives then you would definitely be on your way to employment. Here are the common questions asked during job interviews:
- Tell me about yourself – this should be short and meaningful, something that is not included in your resume but is still relevant to the position that you are applying for. Note that this can be your skills and your abilities.
- Why should we hire you? – this is a common question we don’t want to hear common answers from. Things like ”because I am hardworking,” “determined” and ”loyal” are overused and very generic. Try to describe in your own words how your own self can be an advantage to the company.
- Why do you want to work for our company? –this is where your researched details would come in handy. If you have friends or acquaintances working in that company then ask about their working conditions or services offered by their hospital. For example, explain how you want to be able to work in an institution that values its employees through continuing education programs, team building activities and incentives.
- Why did you leave your previous employer? – this question tells a great deal about your work ethic. Answer it with all honesty and do not put down your previous employer for your shortcomings. Do not divulge company secrets because that will tell the interviewee that you can do it to their company in the future.
