Constipation abnormally delayed or infrequent passage of dry hardened feces (Merriam Webster). Constipation interferes with normal holistic functioning of individual clients. Constipation may be caused by a multitude of factors, some of these include poor dietary intake, a sedentary lifestyle and poor fluid intake.Stress may also cause constipation due to the increased sypathetic responses involved during the phenomena. Constipation brings about additional stress towards an individual as it brings a break towards the curve of normal continuum.It is important for the nurse to properly address this problem and elevate his client’s level of well-being and to balance the continuum curve.
The pt. is experiencing significant emotional stress due to his occupation. He recently moved to a new job which requires him to work the night shift. Emotional stress causes changes in the body’s physiologic functions and one of this is defecation. Stress increases sympathetic activity. Increased sympathetic activity causes relaxation of the bowel and thus leading to constipation.
